The Quest plot shares similarities with the Overcoming the Monster and Rags-to-Riches plots, especially in its basic structure. The story begins with the protagonist embarking on a journey to reach a valuable goal or elixir. This could be a treasure, a promised land, or something immaterial but of immense worth, located far away and justifying any effort to attain.

The Urgent Need for the Quest

The journey is driven by urgency. Life in the protagonist’s community is oppressive or faces destruction, making staying at home impossible. A serious and frightening threat has arisen, and the protagonist realises that only by undertaking this long and dangerous journey can they rectify the situation. The goal of the quest becomes the most important thing to them.

Allies in the Journey

The protagonist is typically accompanied on their journey by a group of companions, each with their own unique skills and personality. The companions’ presence and unique significance to the protagonist are emphasised throughout the story, and the companions play a crucial role in helping the protagonist to overcome obstacles and reach their ultimate goal. The journey itself is filled with various challenges and obstacles, but the protagonist’s drive to reach the ultimate goal remains steadfast throughout. The quest remains unresolved until the objective is achieved, with the objective serving as the central driving force for the story.

Facing the First Obstacles

The protagonist faces specific obstacles on their quest, such as fearsome monsters, temptations to be avoided, and trips to an underworld (whether literally or figuratively), where they temporarily overcome the separation of death, receiving guidance from past spirits. These challenges are interspersed with moments of respite, where they receive aid and guidance from their companions and mentors.

Battling the Archetype of Evil

The protagonist approaches their ultimate goal, but the journey is not yet over. As they near their prize, new obstacles arise, requiring them to mature and face a final confrontation with the archetype of evil. These challenges serve to test their worthiness. Finally, there is a climactic battle against the dark forces that have hindered their progress. Through this final test, the protagonist proves their readiness to secure the elixir and attain complete liberation.

The Protagonist's Triumph and the Future of Their Community

After the final confrontation, the protagonist secures the kingdom, love interest, or life-transforming treasure, signalling a renewal of their life and their community that lasts into the future.
